Underground 2 Revived, at nfsu2.xyz, recompiles the PC version of the 2004 street racer to run in Chrome and Firefox, and builds its online mode around it. Other drivers show up in free roam in Bayview, you can join a friend's room, form a crew whose members always see each other on the map, and send quick-chat phrases while you drive.

The project builds on Talha Müderrisoğlu's NFSU2Recomp static recompiler, and the site's own source is on GitHub. It needs a browser with WebGPU on a device with working graphics acceleration and downloads about 2.9 GB of game data on the first run, so give it a few minutes. How to play Need for Speed: Underground 2 Online

  1. Press Play. nfsu2.xyz opens in a new tab and checks your browser for WebGPU first. If it says Not ready, turn on graphics acceleration in the browser settings and reload.
  2. Press Play on the site and wait for the game data to download on the first visit.
  3. Create a profile in the game, then use Online, Friends and Crews on the start page to meet other players in free roam or join a friend's room.

In menus use the arrow keys and Enter, Esc goes back. Keys can be changed in the game's Options, Controls. On a controller, Home or both sticks pressed in opens the site menu. Touch controls appear while you drive on a touch screen.

Tips

  • Save with Esc or Start, then Garage, Save, and use Download backup on the start page before clearing browser data.
  • Type the same crew name as your friends to always see each other in free roam, with names and map arrows in the crew's colour.
  • F12 opens photo mode, and pressing F12 again takes the shot.

Questions

Can I play Need for Speed Underground 2 online in the browser?
Yes. nfsu2.xyz has its own server: other players appear in free roam, you can race them, join a friend's room or form a crew. No EA account is needed.
Why does it say Not ready?
The port needs WebGPU. Turn on graphics acceleration in your browser settings, update the graphics driver if needed, and reload the page.
Does it work with a controller or on a phone?
The site supports controllers and wheels, and has touch controls for touch screens. It is a large download, so a computer with a graphics card gives the smoothest result.
