About Super Mario Galaxy

Play Super Mario Galaxy free in your browser. No download, no install. 2 sites host it (GitHub Pages mirror, raw.githack.com (original repo)): pick one when you press Play.

Super Mario Galaxy came out on the Wii in November 2007. Mario chases Bowser into space to rescue Princess Peach, hopping between small planets that each pull him with their own gravity, while Rosalina's Comet Observatory serves as the hub. It is one of the best-rated games ever made, and the original leaned on the Wii Remote pointer to collect and shoot Star Bits.

This browser version is SMGwebport by T4ctica1. Its README says it is built on the Super Mario Galaxy decompilation (the Petari project by SMGCommunity) and the GalaxyQuest VR port, compiled to WebAssembly with Emscripten. The game data is part of the port, so you do not need your own copy: it is streamed in pieces as you play, and you can choose to keep about 320 MB or about 1 GB of it in your browser so nothing waits on the network.

The port adds its own settings window with graphics, audio, keyboard, gamepad, touch and save options, plus extras like unlocking Luigi early and skipping the Wii safety screens. On phones it shows on-screen Wii Remote and Nunchuk buttons and can use tilt for the Star Ball and Ray surfing stages.

How to play Super Mario Galaxy

  1. Press Play. The game opens on a GitHub Pages copy of the port in a new tab.
  2. In the Ready to play? window, choose whether to play the opening movies (a big download), then press Play.
  3. Wait for the loading bar. The first start downloads a lot of data, so give it a minute or two on a slow connection.
  4. If you pick the raw.githack.com link instead, press Open the page on its notice first. The opening and ending movies are not available there.

Tips

  • Turn on Quick Launch in Settings to skip the Wii safety screens next time.
  • If the game stutters while streaming, set Download game data ahead to Common (about 320 MB) or Everything but movies (about 1 GB).
  • On a phone, play in fullscreen or add the page to your home screen for more room.

Questions

Do I need my own game files?
No. The port loads the game data itself when you press Play.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It shows on-screen Wii Remote and Nunchuk buttons on touch screens, and tilt steering for the Star Ball. It is a big download, so use Wi-Fi.
Is this an emulator?
No. It is the decompiled game code built for the browser with WebAssembly, not a Wii emulator.
Is it official?
No. It is an unofficial fan project by T4ctica1 and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.
